We use the best equipment for the purpose. This doesn't necessarily mean the most expensive.
You could easily pay a small fortune for a hand made Ouija Board from the internet, but you could just as easily make your own.
Boards do not need to be made of exotic wood and have gold inlays. Just remember the purpose of the kit and prepare it to the best standard you can.
We have not compromised on the quality of our photographic and audio equipment. This is purely to ensure the integrity of any evidence that we find.
CANON XL-2 PRO CAM
Our productions are important to us, so we use pro level cameras to capture the group organising and setting up vigils. We have set a standard for ourselves that we will not compromise. We believe in the maxim: If it's worth doing, it's worth doing properly.
SONY HDR-HC3
We capture our events using HD and Standard definition. We only use Mini-DV tapes as they provide the best quality. Pixel noise can ruin the best shots, and evidence is difficult enough to find without having to sift through low quality footage.
EMF METERS
To measure any disturbances in the electro magnetic field of an area.
Any evidence found using this equipment, however, must be proved to discount things like mobile phones, dictaphones and almost anything else that generates an electrical field. Useful, but not particularly accurate.
SONY PC-110
In our opinion, Sony cameras offer the best optical quality combined with their superior sensors. Sony Night Shot is by far the best standard we have used. The PC 110, despite it's quality, remains one of the best cameras for the job and are still available, at very reasonable prices, online.
ZOOM H4 FIELD RECORDER
This is no ordinary dictaphone. This four-track field recorder enables us to record at different frequencies, and in seperate locations simultaneously.
It's powerful condensor mic, and the additional XL ports enable us to attach seperate condensors to capture various noise temperature at once. This is invaluable when studying EVPs (electronic voice phenomena).
MOTION SENSORS
Excellent when used in conjunction with CCTV, Lock Off cameras etc. If anything breaks the beam, and there is no recorded explanation, who knows?
Very useful equipment!
SUPERIOR RESOLUTION MONITOR & CCTV RECORDER
Given the duration of our investigations, we have to take a break. That's where our CCTV cameras and monitor comes in. We can view multiple areas, and continue recording, while we relax for ten minutes. We recommend monitors above 30" to ensure the best possible viewing.
TEMPERATURE GUAGE
Used for baseline reading and to determine any sudden rise or drop in temperature. Some anomolous readings could be explained following an immediate investigation, but sudden and rapid changes could be the result of something else, not so easily explained.
INFRA-RED CCTV CAMERAS
Hand held cameras are great, but even the ones used for 'Lock Off' require maintenance; checking the tape, ensuring there is still power etc. But with CCTV cameras, you can position them wherever you like and continue with your investigation, safe in the knowledge that you are capturing as much as is possible. All that is required is having someone with the patience to review the vast amounts of footage captured.
IMPORTANT: When using CCTV equipment, please ensure you understand the law regarding Public Surveillance. DO NOT RECORD ANY AREAS THAT ARE CONTRARY TO THE DATA PROTECTION ACT.
EXPERIMENTS:
There are many conventional techniques used in paranormal investigations, as well as newer, technology based experiments. Of course, many of these techniques can be adapted. As is the case with all things, unexpected results can be achieved through trial and error.
DICTAPHONES
To record audio experiments for analysis. If your equipment can record in different frequencies, it is useful to alter the settings occasionally and analyse any evidence on decent audio software. We have recorded EVPs that sound 'normal' while the ambient sound is either speeded up or slowed down. Very interesting results can be achieved.
It should be encouraged by any group leaders to undertake experiments designed to disprove paranormal activity. If the ideomotor effect is a likely reason for activity, then that effect should be examined with the same rigour as other experiments. It is only through discovery of rational processes that we will eventually find something genuinely unexplained.
Evidence should not be tainted by our overwhelming desire to make contact with the spirit world.
IDEOMOTOR EFFECT:
is the unconcious physical responses our bodies make to stimulus. If, for instance, a muscle group registers pressure, the muscle fibre will react involuntarily and counteract the pressure felt. This defence mechanism works on an extremely subtle level. If one person feels the slightest pressure from a planchette, the people around the device will react in opposition to that force. Whatever your belief, it is important to take every variable into account when performing experiments.
OUIJA BOARD
Perhaps the most well known, and controversial, experiment is the Ouija Board. A lot has been said regarding the use of this equipment. It has to be said that there is evidence of psychological harm being done to some people who have used it. But that does not suggest it is intrinsically unsafe to use.
Safeguards should be put in place and it is recommended that you only use the board with someone who is experienced in its usage.
People who are more susceptible to suggestion should not use the Ouija.
Ghostnspectors are seasoned and highly experienced practitioners of the board and have encountered events that defy explanation. The ideomotor effect has been cited as one possible explanation towards why the board works. Yet, this does not explain why the board still worked during a controlled experiment, where those on the board were blindfolded, the board was rearranged to ensure no one could determine which way the board was facing, and we still recieved accurate responses to our questions.
Is the Ouija Board dangerous?
The Ouija Board can be likened to the measures you take when securing your home.
You wouldn't leave the front door unlocked or invite total strangers in.
Use the board correctly, and you will enjoy the experience. Yes, it can be frightening, but when the safeguards are in place, it can also be exhilerating.
The most to fear from the Ouija Board is other peoples' lack of experience.
Do not use it unless you are confident that your fellow practitioners are fully able to cope with the consequences and know how to safely open and close the board.
GOADING:
Goading is not recommended unless you are fully confident that you are 100% safe to do so.
Much has been said about this practice. Certain wisdom suggests we must treat every visiting spirit with reverence and respect at all times.
In principle, we agree with this. Unfortunately, when using the Ouija Board, you occasionally recieve communication form entities that lie and decieve. Should these be treated with respect?
Ghostnspectors have used Goading techniques to increase the energy of spirits that have lied and decieved us.
It has been suggested that malevolent spirits will attempt to gain a foothold by using benign responses. It is only through Goading that you can begin to measure the true intention of a 'visitor'.
In our experience, the spirit has chosen to say 'Goodbye' rather than engage further. Yet, the more agressive of them, the ones who would lie to us, have responded with impressive energy.
We have video evidence of such on our Video page.
We have witnessed the glass falling over, defying physics; we have encountered a spirit so strong that six people could not stop the glass from moving uncontrollably.
Should we show reverence to spirits such as this, who's sole intention is to gain access to those around the board.
I'll let you decide the answer to that question.
GLASS DIVINATION
Oddly, glass divination is not seen in the same controversial light as the Ouija Board, yet in principal they are very much alike.
The object is to generate energy from the users to enable a spirit entity to move the glass in response to questions.
There is, again, the suggestion that the actual participants are moving the glass rather than an astral presence, as a reult of the ideomotor effect.
Whatever your belief, whether sceptical or a committed believer, glass divination is an experiment that requires patience and the results should be viewed objectively.
AUTO-WRITING
Auto writing is said to allow visiting entities to communicate using the combined energies of those taking part. The planchette should be able to move freely and the participants should have only the lightest contact with the surface. Questions are asked and then the writing is analysed for accuracy or for anything pertinent.
It is difficult to substantiate the results of this experiment. Ghostnspectors once performed an experiment to see if the ideomotor effect was responsible.
One of our investigators suggested a symbol or a letter that should be written. With very subtle movements, the planchette can be manipulated to achieve a result,
without detection from the other practitioners. Although this type of experiment may seem unfair or even vaguely dishonest, it is valuable to maintain an objective veiwpoint.
Therefore, we will always strive to find evidence for and against any given theory. If it genuinely remains unexplained, then we have achieved a satisfactory result.
SEANCE
Probably the most popular experiment in paranormal investigating. The Seance has been practiced for generations and by many cultures.
All that is required is a group of people who are willing to accept that communication with the deceased is at least possible. An open mind and a willingness to allow preconceptions to be allayed is really all that is required.
The combined energy of the group is said to enable a visiting entity to communicate. Some mediums are said to be receptive to the will of such and there are
claims that some mediums have the ability to become host to the spirit for the duration of the seance.
Whether you accept that possibility is a matter of personal belief.
This experiment can yield some very interesting results.
The seance differs from the Ouija board in that communication is said to be made with spirits that are already present within the space, practitioners of the seance are not inviting anything to come through, but rather communicating with what is already there.
E.V.P (Electronic Voice Phenomena)
People have been recording 'Ghost Voices' for decades. The concept is not a new one. Technology may have changed, but the principle remains as it has always been: capturing the disembodied voices of spirits.
Experiments in 'White Noise' were once popular - mainly due to the fact that analogue signals were all that was available. With the onset of digital technology, it enabled everyone to record ambient sound and analyse the files for anomolous sounds.
EVP analysis can be achieved with any audio/visual software that is freely available to download. You don't need expensive equipment to begin such experiments.
We use a high end multi-track recorder in addition to standard dictaphones. This is because we want to ensure the integrity of our evidence. Condensor microphones are powerful and the clarity of sound is second to none. Therefore, we can rule out low quality glitches in the event that we record that all important unexplained sound.
It does take nerves, though, to put those headphones on and turn the volume up, especially in the dark. But when you hear that voice answering a direct question, the results are worth it.
LONE VIGILS
This is definitely not a suggestion that you should venture into a location alone, in fact we highly recommend that you do not.
A lone vigil is essentially an area within a location reputed to be haunted.
It is a quiet area, somewhere that someone can be still and listen and occasionally call out to anything that may be present.
The area must be checked first to ensure the safety of the practitioner, as they will be in darkness.
We record the session using video cameras and audio equipment.
This experiment is not for the feint hearted, as it can be frightening.
It requires focus and a determination to exceed your own limits.
The area around the vigil will be free of other people, so once you commit to undertake this experiment, you must stick with it or shout for someone to end it. Panic can make people react without thought to their own safety, so please ensure there is adequate lighting available to be used should the practitioner wish to cease.
This experiment is not recommended for everyone.
SCRYING
There are many forms of scrying. The most well known is the traditional Crystal Ball. Any smooth reflective surface can be used, including water (Hydromancy). An ever increasing popular version is mirror scrying.
If performed correctly, mirror scrying can theoretically place someone in a state of altered perception. It is during this state that practitioners have claimed to have seen the faces of those who are deceased. Scrying, it has been suggested, can invoke the presence of evil. Why this could be the case is not known and depends on your belief.
It is recommended that the practitioner sits comfortably before a
mirror, subdued light should be used, such as a candle.
The light should be sufficient to illuminate the practitioners head and shoulders only and must not penetrate the room.
The scryer must then concentrate on their own features, disregarding anything else in the reflection. Other people in the room must remember to avoid being seen in the mirror.
There have been many cases of people ceasing the experiment at the first stage, due to the overwhelming sense of 'Weirdness'. They can become a little disoriented and emotional.
For those who continue through this, the experience can be quite exhilerating and uplifting.
Whether it is a genuine paranormal event or simply the power of the mind adjusting to a new visual stimulus, the effects of scrying can be impressive.
TABLE TIPPING
There is strong opinion from both believers and sceptics regarding the validity of table tipping as an experiment. The former will have you believe that it is the result of a spirit manifestation physically moving the table by using the combined energy of the group, the latter will tell you it is, once again, the ideomotor effect.
This experiment was very popular as a parlour game in the 19th century and has continued to be popular to the present day.
There was a decline due to Faraday's evidence which, to many, proved the ideomotor effect.
As a rule of thumb, the table should be no heavier than one person could manage to lift single handedly, but should be large enough to allow 4 to 5 people around it. The practitioners can use either the flat of their hand or their fingertips.
It takes undisturbed concentration to achieve a result, and the room must be in darkness or in extremely subdued light.
Those around the table should concentrate their energies, and imagine that energy transferring down their arms into the table.
Reports have claimed that people have experienced everything from a gentle rocking motion, to the table actually floating in mid air.
As with any technique, Table Tipping is recommended to be practiced, practiced and practiced to achieve results.
If possible, the same 4 or 5 people should undertake this experiment on each seperate occasion so they can develop their concentration levels.
There are, of course, many variations on the experiments named above, and many more that have not been mentioned. Every group that is willing to undertake investigations should be encouraged to develop their own techniques and quite literally 'Experiment' with what they have at their disposal.
In our experience, that is usually a committment and a passion for what we do.
If it's there, we will continue to look for it.
